Can I fly British Airways with SmartScoot™ Travel Scooters?

British Airways Logo

Yes. British Airways allows passengers to use travel scooters powered by lithium ion(li-ion) batteries. SmartScoot™ meets British Airways’ limit of 300 watt hours for such batteries. With a rating of 288 watt hours, the SmartScoot™ also meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations for traveling with mobility aids.

British Airways asks passengers to remove the battery from their travel scooters and take it on board. “Protect the removed batteries from short circuit by covering exposed terminals with electrical tape. In order to protect them from damage, place batteries individually in a protective pouch and take them with you as hand baggage.”

The SmartScoot™ battery is easily removed. Just slide the battery holder latch and disconnect the battery cord. Carefully slide up the battery pack and remove. The SmartScoot™ can be driven to the end of the jetway, easily collapsed, and left for baggage handlers to store in the cargo hold. It will be returned at the end of the flight “as close to the aircraft door as possible,” the airline says.

To store travel scooters properly, British Airways requests information about the device, including dimensions, weight, type of battery and instructions for preventing inadvertent operation. “We will always try to place your mobility aid in containers to keep them safe.”

The airline can accommodate the SmartScoot™ on its flights to and from the UK and Europe either fully assembled or folded without the seat.

If you need additional help, let British Airways know at least two days before departure. Tell the airline you’ll be traveling with a mobility scooter. If booking online, you can click the Disability Assistance link in the Service Requests section of your booking, the airline says.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) also offers a helpline for travelers who need special assistance. You should call the TSA Cares helpline 3 days before departure with questions about screening policies and what to expect at security checkpoints.

You can download the battery compliance certificate here for SmartScoot ™ travel scooters and take it with you on your next flight.
